What to do if you suspect a propane leak

Propane is naturally odorless, but suppliers add a strong, distinctive scent — often compared to rotten eggs, spoiled meat or skunk spray — to help you detect leaks quickly. For added protection, install UL-listed gas detectors near your propane appliances. (Keep in mind that carbon monoxide detectors do not detect propane.)

If you ever think you smell gas, follow these critical safety steps right away:

  • Extinguish all flames and ignition sources, including cigarettes and candles.
  • Leave the area immediately — don’t stay indoors or near the leak.
  • Avoid flipping switches, using phones or touching appliances.
  • If it’s safe to do so, close the gas valve on the tank or cylinder.
  • From a safe distance, call 911 and contact Heart of Texas Propane.
  • Let emergency personnel and licensed propane technicians inspect and repair the issue.
  • Stay clear until professionals confirm it’s OK to return. Never reopen valves yourself.
  • A certified technician will fix leaks, check appliances and relight pilot lights safely.
