In the 1850s, John Burleson, a war hero from the Texas Revolution, was granted 1,800 acres of land, which he promptly settled and named Burleson. That settlement would grow and eventually come to be known as Lampasas Springs for the mineral springs nearby. (“Lampasas” could refer to the lilies and watercress that grew near these springs.) In 1883, the city was incorporated as Lampasas.

An interesting historical footnote is that Lampasas was the site of a military-run social experiment in the 1950s. On April 3, 1952, the military staged a fake Communist takeover of the town, spreading propaganda, staging arrests and closing churches, banks, stores and schools. It was called Operation Longhorn. War games were played outside the city, ruining some ranchland in the process. Most locals were left quite upset by the operation, and the next such experiment, several years later, was moved from Texas to Louisiana.
