The town of Goldthwaite was a small community until the arrival of the railroad in 1885. From that moment, its population bloomed, and it was established as a town in 1885. The name comes from a railway employee named George Goldthwaite. By the start of the 20th century, virtually every home in the city had a water well with a windmill, earning Goldthwaite the nickname “the City of Windmills.”
Some of our most famous residents have included the prolific radio actor Barton Yarborough and the UT Austin coach Jody Conradt, who was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
