In the 1840s, the first European settlers arrived in a region that for many centuries had been the home of the Lipan Apache, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The newcomers were merchants and shingle-makers; the community they founded was called Brownsborough. In 1856, however, the town was platted by James Kerr, a major in the Texas Revolution. He named the community Kerrville.

Kerrville grew throughout the 19th century, driven by gristmills and sawmills, freighting, banking, ranking and brokering. Some of Kerrville’s most prominent residents have included:
