The Harper, TX, story

In 1863, the first European settlers arrived in the area that eventually became Harper. The next year, one of these families faced hostility from the Kiowa tribe, resulting in two deaths. A marker on U.S. 290 commemorates what’s called the McDonald Massacre.

In 1883, a post office was established by George Franklin Harper, and our town was officially on the map. You can learn more about the early history of the town at the Harper Pioneer Memorial Museum.
