When the community that became Brownwood was initially settled by Europeans, it was situated east of Pecan Bayou, but that area became untenable because of disputes over land and water rights. In due course, the community was moved to its current location and was incorporated in 1884. (The dispute also led to the incorporation of the town of Early.)
