How Many Propane Tank Sizes Are There?

A Propane Tank Guide from Heart of Texas Propane

However, when you secure propane services with the right company, that information doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or confusing.

Heart of Texas Propane carries a range of high-quality propane tanks, and we offer sales, leasing, repair, and refurbishment services.

We have also compiled the guide below so that you can learn all about propane tanks.

Aboveground vs. Underground Propane Tanks

There are two main options when it comes to propane tank installation: aboveground and underground.

Aboveground tanks are fairly inexpensive to install and maintain, provide easy access for refilling and maintenance, are more durable than underground tanks, and can be installed in a variety of locations on a property.

However, they can take up more space on a property, are more susceptible to damage from weather and pests, and are more visible than underground tanks, which some homeowners do not like.

Underground propane tanks are more aesthetically pleasing, take up less space on a property, and are better protected from severe weather and pests.

The downsides of underground tanks are that they are more expensive to install and maintain, are harder to access for refilling and maintenance, and can become damaged by excavation or flooding.

Propane Tank Sizes

Here is a breakdown of the common residential propane tank sizes:

• 60- to 100-pound cylinders: Tanks of this size are refillable and portable. They can be used for gas grills, patio heaters, and RVs.
• 120-gallon tanks: If you only use propane to heat water, power a space heater, fuel a cooking range, or power a clothes dryer, this size tank will work.
• 150-gallon tanks: These tanks can provide fuel for one or two appliances, such as clothes dryers, water heaters, space heaters, or cooking ranges.
• 250-gallon tanks: These tanks are good for fueling three or more appliances, excluding furnaces and boilers.
• 500-gallon tanks: Larger homes will need a bigger propane tank like this to accommodate their fuel needs.
• 800- to 1,000-gallon tanks: Tanks this large can be used in large homes, as well as smaller businesses that use propane for heating purposes and to fuel additional appliances, including pool and spa heaters.
